Decking the Halls of Holton Home
Every December a fantastic tree from Elysian Hills arrives. The tree gets decorated with the help of our 8th grade companions from Hilltop Montessori. Beforehand, we pop a mountain of popcorn and string it with cranberries while chatting and listening to carols.
Many of the ornaments pre-date me: beautiful handmade lace snowflakes, golden walnuts which were made to replicate ones a resident made while she was a girl in Germany, and others from craft projects and people’s collections. The tree always comes together beautifully.
In the evenings the lights and reflections of the tree warm the Blue Room. Sometimes I read with one little light on so everyone can bask in its glow and listen to the familiar words of holiday stories.
Pam makes beautiful wreaths each year that deck our doors and Chelsea beautifies the parlor, elevators and dining room, with her amazing style. The garland that decorates the stairway joins forces with the greens on the mantles to make the parlor smell perfectly Christmassy! Shirley Squires even lends us some of her nativities to adorn our Halls. Our menorah glows in the evenings, with progressive light and we celebrate the solstice (and the longer days that follow) and light candles and talk about what they represent for Kwanzaa.
Holton Home is inclusive, cozy and warm, with lots of good cheer wafting through the air! May the end of your year be filled with much joy that spills over into the new year!
